How do I maintain my sprinkler system?
- A residential sprinkler system is essentially maintenance free. If your home is on public water, you must have a registered plumber change the Backflow Preventer every 5 years. This devise is used to separate the sprinkler water from the domestic water.
- If you are on private well, you should open the drain valve annually until the fire pump starts up. Once the fire pump starts up, close the drain valve and the system will pump back up to pressure and the pump will shut off. This annual procedure will help ensure proper pump operation.
How do I ensure proper operation?
- Avoid painting and/or covering the sprinkler heads
- Do not hang any objects from the sprinkler heads
In the event of a fire do all the sprinkler heads activate at the same time?
- No. This only happens in the movies. During a fire only the sprinkler head closest to the fire will activate. In most cases only one sprinkler head will activate and control the fire.
How do I know my sprinkler system is turned on?
- If you are able to use your plumbing in your home, your sprinkler system in fully operational. The sprinkler system is being supplied with water before your plumbing is being supplied.
Will my home owner’s insurance rates increase with a sprinkler system?
- No. Generally the rates will decrease as a result of a sprinkler system. Contact your insurance company for more details.
